Harbour Hotels have recently submitted a new planning application for a hotel at Ocean Village. Perhaps the most important thing to point out is that this is not simply a further extension of the original planing permission dating from 2006 and which was later extended in May 2011. This is instead a completely new proposal and it is different in scope. Consequently, if you think you know what is being proposed you may be surprised by how different the two proposals are.
The proposed new hotel is also visually very different from the rather more boxy shape of the 2006 vision. Instead the architects have gone for a look which borrows heavily from nautical and maritime themes.
The new proposal is also no longer just for a hotel! In addition to the proposed 76 bedroom 4/5 star hotel it is envisaged that a number of apartments will need to be created to make the hotel development commercially viable. 12 of these will be incorporated directly into the top of the hotel building. A separate development of 82 residential units over three ground floor restaurants/bars/cafes, a marina office and two small-scale boutique retail units. The development will serve to enliven the current surface car park space overlooking the marina between the proposed hotel and the proposed new Admirals Quay development. The original plan had this area set aside for landscaped gardens and an events space.
Whether you love it or hate it now is your opportunity to make your voice heard. Comments on the proposal are being sought by Southampton council and must reach them by 31st January if they are to be considered. The full planning application can be viewed on the council website. The Application number is: 11/02000/FUL.
The full wording of the planning proposal is:
Site clearance and erection of a 76 bedroom hotel (Class C1) with associated spa, restaurants, bars/clubs and function rooms with 12 residential units (Class C3) in a building ranging in height from 5 storeys to 7 storeys and erection of a building ranging in height from 6 storeys to 10 storeys to provide 82 flats and 1,114 square metres of commercial floorspace (Use Classes A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, or B1) wit associated parking, landscaping and other works.
